What is Good Mileage for a Used Car?

What is considered high mileage for a used car? For many, the cutoff point for good mileage is somewhere around 60,000 miles. Even so, used cars are lasting longer than ever, and even a model with 100,000 miles can be a good investment under the right circumstances.

When is a Used Car a Good Investment?

You should never invest in a pre-owned vehicle that will expire before you pay off your loan. Since most drivers put on around 12,000 miles per year, and you can estimate that a vehicle will last for roughly 200,000 miles (if not longer), you can make an educated guess as to whether or not the vehicle is worth buying!

So, what is good mileage on a used car? It’s subjective. Even if your preferred vehicle has 100,000 miles on the odometer, it may be worth purchasing if you can pay off the loan in three, four, or even five years time. Assuming you drive about as much as the average resident of Chandler or Tempe, that could leave you with at least three to five solid, payment-free years of ownership.

How to Shop for a Used Car with Good Mileage

Mileage is important, but it’s not the only thing you should look at when you’re shopping for a pre-owned vehicle. Here, we’ve highlighted a few of the other most important factors:

  • Low-mileage used cars are often sold with higher price tags. This makes sense, since they’ll last longer, but you should consider your own needs before you spend more than you have to.
  • Maintenance is probably the single most important factor in the long-term health of a vehicle. Choose a vehicle that has a well-documented maintenance history, when possible.
  • It’s a good idea to have a used vehicle inspected by a mechanic before you buy. They can identify structural damage and previous collisions that may not be obvious to the untrained eye.
  • Find out as much as you can about the vehicle’s previous usage. Did the old owner like to go off-road? Did they often engage in heavy towing? Did they live in a cold, harsh climate, or in an area with higher-than-average amounts of moisture? Any of these factors can lead to excess wear and tear that won’t be visible on the odometer.
