The Mercedes-Benz Logo Explained

Mercedes Benz Logo Closeup

Our Chandler customers are very familiar with the Mercedes-Benz logo, meaning they can spot a Mercedes-Benz vehicle from blocks away. But what’s the significance behind the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star? And why is the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo different? We love a good mystery. So, by the end of this article, we’ll have the storied Mercedes-Benz logo explained.

The Mercedes-Benz Logo Explained – A Family History

To trace the history of the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star, we have to go all the way back to Gottlieb Daimler, the founder of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (one of the parent companies of the modern-day automaker). In 1872, Gottlieb sent a postcard to his wife. On the postcard, he drew a three-pointed star over the location of the family home. He meant for the star to represent the prosperity that he knew would someday shine over the company.  Fast forward to 1909, and the company executives decided that the organization needed a new logo. Gottlieb’s sons, Paul and Adolf, recalled that 3-pointed star their late father had drawn so many years earlier, and, voila, a new logo was born. As you can see, the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning is deeply rooted in the Daimler family history.

Mercedes-Benz is Created

In 1926, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft decided to merge with Benz & Cie, another automaker that they’d worked with for years. To form the new company’s name, they combined “Mercedes”–the name of the daughter of one of the owners of DMG–with “Benz” from Benz & Cie.  They also combined the laurel from the Benz & Cie logo with the DMG star to form the new logo. The laurel was later dropped in favor of the clean and simple circle you see today. But the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star has stayed intact for more than 100 years, up to the present day.

The True Mercedes-Benz Logo Meaning

According to the company itself, the true Mercedes-Benz logo meaning has to do with the utilization of universal motorization by Mercedes-Benz, which intended to dominate the land, air, and sea–the three points of the star. Of course, in the minds of most Phoenix-area drivers, the star is synonymous with luxury, quality, and precision engineering.

What About That Mercedes-Benz AMG® Logo?

The Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo is made up of two parts. The left half is the coat of arms of Affalterbach, Germany, the city where the Mercedes-Benz AMG® headquarters are located. The right half pictures a cam, a valve, and a valve spring, all components that symbolize the precision engineering that goes into building hand-crafted Mercedes-Benz AMG® engines.
