How Do You Change a Car Tire?

Changing Your Tire

Here at Mercedes-Benz of Chandler, we think that every driver should be able to answer the question, “How do you change a car tire?” After all, knowing how to change a tire by hand won’t just help you get out of a bind. It will help you drive with more confidence every time you head out on the roads near Phoenix, and you may even be able to provide assistance to someone who needs it! Let’s get started.

Changing Your Mercedes-Benz Tires

In order to change a tire, you’re going to need a few tools. It’s not a bad idea to keep a jack, a lug wrench, and your owner’s manual with you as you travel, and of course, you’ll need a spare or a new tire before you get started. Although jack stands are helpful when you’re performing a tire rotation, they won’t be needed in most cases. So, how do you change a tire, anyway? Here’s the process laid out from start to finish:

  1. Make sure you’re in a safe location, and turn on your hazard lights and parking brake. If you have them, place wheel wedges beneath the tires you’re not changing. If you don’t feel safe, call Mercedes-Benz roadside assistance or some other service.
  2. Remove the wheel cover and start to loosen the lug nuts. Don’t remove them just yet; it’ll be much easier when the tire is off the ground.
  3. Locate the jack point beneath your vehicle, and make sure that the jack is stable beneath it. Raise the jack to lift the tire that needs to be changed off the ground.
  4. Remove the lug nuts and move the flat tire to a safe location. Mount the new tire and screw in the lug nuts as far as you can by hand. Then, tighten them with the lug wrench, working in a star pattern.

Lower your vehicle to the ground, and you’re ready to go! If you’ve put on a spare tire, make sure to drive under 50 mph, and try to make it to a service center as soon as possible! Most spare tires are only made to last for around 50 miles or so.

How Often Should You Change Car Tires?

When something goes wrong, you’ll know exactly when it’s time to change a tire. Still, if you want to avoid flats and blowouts, it’s essential to be proactive! Most tires will last between six and ten years, but the lifespan of your tires will vary, depending on how well you care for them as you drive around Tempe and Mesa. If your tread reaches a depth of 2/32 of an inch or less, you’re definitely ready for a set of new tires.

If you’re already taking the time to care for your tires, make sure you know how to check your brake fluid, too!
